The new bridge is now open over Coral Creek. It's at least twice as wide as the old bridge but only about a foot higher. They are working on the old bridge now getting ready to remove it. One of the guys working on the old bridge told me it was being taken out on July 12.

Twice as wide... as in, a wider opening down at the water that is something more like 20' of width clearance?

I wouldn't expect that to make a big differance, the old fishing pier is still there with the piles across the channel. Dave

Yes the bridge is much wider for you to go through, I'll measure it the next time I go under it. From what I've been told they plan on taking the old pilings out by the old railroad trestle but don't forget there is an oyster bed there and the water is not very deep so you need to stay near the trestle when the tide is low. Looking forward to next March so we can try something new.

Today I was watching them take the old bridge down, the area has a new look. . I don't know what else they plan to do. The new bridge is wider but not much higher for going through.

FWIW, I could have rowed Oaracle easily through the new bridge, and that requires 14 feet of horizontal clearance. That eliminates the need to paddle most sailboats -- at least monohulls. But the masts will still have to come down on anything bigger than Sand Flea . . .

Tyro, are they removing the pilings for the old bridge as well? Even under water?

The new bridge removes an important filter so I am looking into adding some temporary "pilings" that will be 10 feet apart that all boats must pass through. I should have them in place by EC2011.

Chief

Is there any truth to the rumor the "new pilings" you are going to erect are acutally several large electrified cattle prods connected by an electric fence in order to form a new filter?

The old bridge is just about gone, I've been watching them take it down on the days I paddle. They put all the remains on a barge and take it about six miles out in the gulf and dump it. I watched how they took out the pilings the guy is good that runs the machine. You'll still have to take the mast down.
