| hey madave!.,. this is a BSD question, mark is busy making canoes!
i want to adapt my aka stays to a boat thats alignment is a bit off from my originsl boat. do i move/replace the black plastic conections at the hull, or get two sets of the the short angled tubes bracing the aka to the 4 hull points? i want to use my sail rig on both boats.....
over time i have heard mention it might be nice to set up the mast a little aft of where it fits naturally on a sea wind. i'm making a deck plate to close in that fore triangle. before i drill it out, i'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for how far one might move it back from the bow? |

Hi. Here my email davev@baloghsaildesigns.com and my office phone number 718-5481188 if you ever need a fast answer. Do not drill extra holes in the crosstube. Holes are a weak point in alum. and can lead to failure. I suggest changing the structs. It might be a pain to change them for each kayak but the only other choice is getting another crosstube.

Hi Greg,
This really isn't complicated. The cheap way is to move the mounts! Just pretend the boat never had them set before. Place the mounts exactly where you think that you'll get the best performance out of your boat, keeping in mind that you are using the tubes that you already have. Once you have the new location set, drilled and mounted you'll have to address the old holes. There are a few different approaches. The cheapest is duct tape on the inside. The next idea is to find a short bolt w/washers and a nut cap. This will only work if the new location of the mounting bracket isn't in the way. The third option is the best but takes more time and a little money. Place a patch over the holes using kevlar or fiberglass. The Sea Wind is plenty strong that you won't be compromising its strength by adding a couple more holes. You really are only needing to block the old holes with some method. I wish you luck and this was just an opinion from someone who knows little about these sorts of things. Take care, Dexter (aka TABA)

Greg
You have an expensive boat and sail rig. Don't compromise them. Spring for a second cross tube w/ stays if you can afford it, and optimize the set-up. Otherwise, unless both boats are the same width at the cross tube location, your stays might be canted in or out too much. For maximum strength, the stays should be perpendicular to the aka.
