I need to better understand the following rule:

Self Inflicted Portages Sometimes you may determine that paddling or sailing around a point or other obstruction will take more time or effort than taking a short portage. This is OK if the distance portaged is less than ¼ mile. However, you may not do this at checkpoints when doing so would bypass an intentional filter

During the EC portion of the UFC my aka broke.  I was able to recover and land without dumping.  After I stowed all gear, I attempted to a beach launch as a class 1.  Because of the deteriorating weather, I could not get off the beach.  Following a delightfuly debate with a local homeowner I was allowed to portage over his 10 foot wide stip of private land onto the public road.  I then portaged about a mile to the ICW where I launched and continued.  The above rule would have DQ'd me for my efforts.

If the intent is to prohibit portages around filters, then identify the filters in the rules.  If the issue is making portaging Snore's Hills illegal, then declare the upper St. Mary's a filter that all must do.

However, portaging between the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean and the ICW should be allowed.  One incurs a significant time penalty for doing that portage and it is an option of last resort, making it illegal is illogical.

OK then. You could also carry a bike and what the heck just tow you boat around Florida for one big portage.

If we try to define every little thing to the nth degree, the rules will be longer than any of the recent bills passed in congress. That rule that you don't like was put in there specifically because of some smart-a-s that suggested just towing the boat from start to finish.

The point is that this is a paddling and sailing race for small boats. Portages are allowed when necessary. Sometimes they are strictly defined like St. George to Fargo. And the rules have already been updated so that your portage from Traders Hill to St. George is more strictly controlled - the upper St. Marys IS the intended course and IS meant as an intentional filter.

And don't forget the Prime Directive. It is for special circumstance like your 1-mile portage.

Thank you for the clarification.

Amazing- I got out of the boat after the UFC swearing never to do it again.  But, that was then.  Right now I am trying to figure out how I can get the month of March 2012 off.... and where to store the chain saw in my Kruger.

Thanks Chief for answering this.  I have been off camping and paddling the past week.  I have to drive to town for internet even when I am in camp.

I look forward to seeing you both at the North Carolina Challenge.
