Thread: How to adjust the BSD old-style inflatable ama struts?

Fellows,

I just purchased a used old-style BSD outrigger and have installed the brackets, struts etc.

My question is how to tension the struts that hold the inflatable ama.

The inner struts have a line that pulls the open end of the struts inboard, tensioning them. And a jam cleat holds this line.

The outer struts have a small line ending in a loop on top that if pulled, pulls the bottom of those struts outboard, tensioning them. There is no fitting to hold the loop at this end.

If I tension one set of struts and then pull on the other line, that pulls the other struts back in the wrong direction.

So is there a logical order to which line to pull first?

Am I supposed to secure the outer strut line with loop, and if so, where?

Do I first tension and secure the inboard line in the jam cleat, and then pull on the outboard loop to tension the outboard struts?

What should the struts look like looking down on them from above? Both set vertical, or the inboard ones angled slightly inboard and the outboard ones angled slightly outboard?

Thanks,
Marty Cooperman

Hi. Secure the outer struts first then install amas and then pull the inner strut line and  when it is under tenion use the jam cleat to lock it in. Maddave

It sounds like you do not have the outter loop secured as intended.  Pass it through the opening in the end fitting, then pass it around the outside of the end fitting.  Then, assuming the previous owner has not retied the factory knot, when you pull hard on the inner line and secure it in the jam cleat, the outboard struts will be canted slightly outward, and the inboard struts will be canted slightly inward (towards the boat).

how about if your struts do not match another hull fitting?  would it be better to switch struts per boat,  or move and redril holes for the black plastic strut mounts on the hull?

They are talking about the AMA struts not the hull struts.

thanks etch!  i knew this, i'm just trying to ease in on a buisy manufacturers thread for his advice. i live off the grid and dont see too many phones,  so this is my main conduit.

i want to use my rig on the sea wind i got from TABA.  the black plastic hull fitting s are too worn to want to use from a new possition,  so instead of just moving them,  i'm going to buy two more and keep my hull struts as is.  sorta tight on funds,  and just wanted a hand finding my own bootstraps.  was hoping someone else has already learned this lesson for hand up to me.

since i am moving the hull strut placement,  i am curious if anyone has tried placing the mast further back than the foreward "V" of the cowling on a sea wind.  a long time back,  sailmaker mentioned a more aft placement might make for better sailing with the sea wind.

right now i am using that heat molded plastic boss you sent me years back,  but am going to make a deck plate for the mast thats will hold the spray skirt in a similar fashion as manitou cruiser's deck piece.

i enjoyed seeing the pics of verlens memorial gathering.  next best thing to having been there. the only other kruger boats/paddlers i see are on this web site......
