Keep Your Tracking Active

Post by Chief »

I would like to send our tracking information to Race Owl. In order to do that, we have to have current tracking points for every participant. From now until the start of the EC and UM we need to send at least one OK Message every week. In order to assure that, I suggest twice a week.

You can send these messages from your backyard or a parking lot. You don't have to be out on the water.

Hi Chief,

I have noticed two things. I just want to bring them to your attention.

1. The first default message sent by Garmin InReach is, “I'm checking in. Everything is okay.”

The WaterTribe documentation says its “I’m checking in, everything is OK.” These do not match and when I send this message does not appear on the WaterTribe tracker. When I send the 2nd message, “I’m starting my trip.“ it does show up.

2. My 2nd ok message, sent using “I’m starting my trip.“, is showing up on WaterTribe as an OK message but has not updated my location on RaceOwl.

Race Owl won't go fully active until the events start. I only see one OK Message on the WaterTribe Tracker. Garmin is a bit tricky to work with because their messages use different formats and can also be setup by the users. We take their messages and convert them to our standard OK, Custom, and Help that originated with Spot.

Need to add a little more on Garmin inReach. The Garmin Mini (and maybe more) has a few preset messages that we interpret as follows:
Some Garmin devices have preset messages that cannot be changed by users. Currently these messages are as
follows:
• “I’m checking in, everything is OK.” -- We will see this as an OK message.
• “I’m starting my trip.” – We will see this as an OK message.
• “I’m ending my trip.” – We will see this as a CUSTOM message.
We don’t know of anything that we can use as a Help message
This was taken from our Garmin Setup document available in the Events section of the site. If you are using a Garmin device, please take a look at that document.

Also, Garmin changes things from time to time. So you may have to adapt.
