We Need Better Tracking Compliance

Post by Chief »

We had several problems leading up to and during the EC2026 and UM2026. I hope we can do better in the upcoming NC Events and all events going forward.

First, make sure your tracking device is able to send messages that translate to our OK, Custom, and Help messages. You need to send each one and then see it in our Tracking Map. Send the message and then click on your icon. Does it say OK or Custom or Help? If not, update your device. There are guides on the right side of the Events page in the web site. BUT - Garmin and Spot change things all the time so be ready to adapt.

Second, send at least one message once or twice during the week. Obviously, it's best if you do this out on the water getting in some training, but even from your backyard it is good to keep an active track going leading up to the event.

And finally, use your device properly during the event. Have it in tracking mode while you are on the water. Send an OK at major turning points for your route. Send a Custom message when you stop for camping or at anchor. And finally, send an OK or Custom when you are at the CheckPoint. Note that for virtual CheckPoints you need to be within 0.1 miles of the CP. For an actual CheckPoint you need to have your bow touching the beach or at a dock.

Any questions?
